I. Am. Disorganized. There’s no denying it! Anyone who works with me knows that one of my most popular lines throughout the day is “ugh… where did I put that?”. The “that” varies from a document I was holding 2 minutes prior to something I was working on just yesterday. Don’t get me wrong. I get things done and I would venture a guess that to the outside world, I look like I’ve got it all ‘together’. I run a software company, I own a busy little photography studio, I play gigs, I attend networking events and I’m a pretty social gal. I get the question: “How do you do it?” pretty frequently. The impression is likely that only an organized individual could get through it all!
The truth of the matter is, I really don’t know! Somehow, I get through every day, getting done what needs to get done but I know I could manage my time much better if I could manage my ‘stuff’. I try, I really do… I buy pretty folders, I have oodles of apps that claim they’ll make me an organized individual and I have an obsession with day planners (both the paper and the online versions). I think this is due to the fact that I have this illusion that I’ll someday wake up and I’ll magically be able to drop the ‘chaos’ out of my so-called ‘organized chaos’. If anything, however, I would say that this little problem of mine is somehow getting worse! I don’t know if it’s my age or my tendency to over commit myself but somehow, I find myself forgetting to answer important text messages, leaving things to the last minute and unable to concentrate.
I’ve read plenty of articles and blogs on the topic of getting organized. They give me the following advice:
- Turn off your cell phone (not gonna happen).
- Don’t multitask (If I could avoid it, I would).
- Time Block (I’ve tried… it’s just not for me).
It’s not so much that I’m unwilling to follow advice or give things a try. I’ve genuinely attempted a lot of the suggested methods for getting organized. While I admit that my life is uncharacteristically busy, I also know that there are plenty of folks like me out there. I can’t possibly be the only one!
The point of this blog post is not to give you advice on getting organized (I think we all know based on the first paragraph that I am in no way deserving of providing those kinds of tidbits). My goal is to admit my fault, for anyone to read and to get some real and worthwhile advice that I can follow. So yes, this post is a question more than an answer… What do you do to stay organized?
