The importance of self care is something that is often overlooked in the early stages of a startup. It’s also something that is crucial to the success or your business. All too often, we get caught up in the hustle and forget to focus on ourselves, which can lead to losing focus – I am guilty as charged! Over the last year I’ve learnt so much about myself, about my limitations, about my strengths and my weaknesses. I am ever-evolving and strive to do better each day. I want to share this with as many people as possible so I can be part of a movement that celebrates others and lifts them up. Especially when life as a business owner can prove to be very overwhelming!
Let’s face it, there never seems to be enough hours in a day. One of the most important things that I have learned over this last year is to hire help as soon as you can, even if you think you cannot afford to! Wearing all the hats can be tiring and don’t get me wrong, learning all of the aspects of your new business is very important and very rewarding. Plus it helps to know what exactly you are delegating in order to find the perfect person for the task. Focusing your efforts on all aspects of your business however, can take the focus away from the things that matter most, like growing your brand, increasing your presence in the community, and building relationships with new and existing clients. It can sometimes be difficult to hire support staff right away as the right person may not have crossed your path yet, but don’t stop looking! It can be easy to feel overwhelmed when you don’t have that person to delegate tasks to but finding them can be exactly what your business needs! Even if you don’t find your person right off the bat, you can hire Mr. or Mrs. right now while you continue your search for the person who fits best with you and your business.
Another very important thing I’ve learnt is to ask for help when you need it. Don’t take it all on yourself all the time! Reach out to friends and family for help on the home front or maybe even hire a housekeeper. Don’t see asking for help as a failure but instead as an investment in yourself and your business. Your hard work should be rewarded with a clean and organized home life so that you can recharge and regroup with your loved ones!
Always take time each morning to breathe and be thankful for all that is positive in your life. Stretch, have that morning coffee, read that motivational or inspirational book – even if only a few pages each day! Each evening or before you head home for the night, set aside 30 mins to plan your next day, prioritizing ‘must do’s’ over ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ items. Review these items each day after your morning ritual to channel your focus for the day!
Your new mantra as an entrepreneur should be ‘Failing To Plan Is Planning To Fail!’. Why not make this your self care mantra as well and plan to work self care into your routine every day, week, and month? Plan a workout routine that you love, a spa day or an evening activity to look forward to. If you don’t plan for it, something will always get in the way! Reward yourself for all that you do by making self care a priority and it will come back to you with unmatched focus, energy, and excitement to keep innovating, achieving and growing!
